Outline

  1. Start from the product shape, not the trend list
  2. Frontend and delivery (web app realities)
  3. Backend, data, and multi-tenancy
  4. Auth, billing, and admin surfaces
  5. Ops: environments, CI, observability
  6. How we usually approach SaaS builds at Apexic

Starter text

A SaaS stack should match the product you are shipping in the next year—not the conference talk you saw last week.

Start with constraints

Ask:

  • Who are the tenants, and how strict is data isolation?
  • Do you need realtime collaboration on day one?
  • Is billing usage-based, seat-based, or hybrid?
  • What can your team maintain after launch?

Those answers matter more than picking a fashionable database.

A common, maintainable default

Many early SaaS products do well with:

  • TypeScript end-to-end for shared types and hiring flexibility
  • A modern React / Next.js app for the customer UI and admin
  • A clear API layer (often Node.js) with explicit authorization checks
  • PostgreSQL as the system of record
  • Managed auth and Stripe (or similar) when payments are required
  • CI that runs tests and deploys to staging before production

This is a starting point, not a rule. Mobile-heavy products, heavy analytics pipelines, or regulated environments change the map.

Multi-tenancy is a product decision

Shared database with tenant_id, schema-per-tenant, or separate databases each have tradeoffs in cost, isolation, and ops complexity. Choose based on risk and sales promises—not convenience alone.

What to postpone

You can often delay exotic event buses, microservices splits, and multi-region active-active setups until you have evidence they are needed. Premature distribution is a common way to burn runway.
